Fuel Conversion

New York City is phasing out the use of #6 heating oil. Bright Power will help you decide the best course of action for your building.

Boiler, No. 6 Fuel OilIn July 2012, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will stop issuing Certificates to Operate for boilers burning #6 oil, under city rules finalized in 2011. Boilers with Certificates to Operate that renew after July 1, 2012 must be converted to burn #4 fuel oil (which in turn will be phased out in 2030), #2 oil or natural gas. Conversion from #6 raises complex issues:

  • Is utility gas service available for my building?
  • If so, does the bulding's plumbing allow for easy conversion?
  • If there is no gas, which makes the most sense-- #2 oil? #4? How about biofuel?
  • Can we reuse the existing boiler?
  • Will we have to reline the building's chimney?
  • What are the conversion costs? The long-term financial implications?
  • Are there incentives available to help pay for conversion?
