Fuel Conversion
New York City is phasing out the use of #6 heating oil. Bright Power will help you decide the best course of action for your building.
In July 2012, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will stop issuing Certificates to Operate for boilers burning #6 oil, under city rules finalized in 2011. Boilers with Certificates to Operate that renew after July 1, 2012 must be converted to burn #4 fuel oil (which in turn will be phased out in 2030), #2 oil or natural gas. Conversion from #6 raises complex issues:
- Is utility gas service available for my building?
- If so, does the bulding's plumbing allow for easy conversion?
- If there is no gas, which makes the most sense-- #2 oil? #4? How about biofuel?
- Can we reuse the existing boiler?
- Will we have to reline the building's chimney?
- What are the conversion costs? The long-term financial implications?
- Are there incentives available to help pay for conversion?
